Deepak Chopra talks about how our bodies are designed to stay in balance, and when they go out of balance, a natural mechanism has interfered. Usually, this occurs through the choices we make that become habits. Decisions are aware and can be reversed. Habits are unconscious and are considerably more difficult to reverse. Still, the increased awareness that can bring any health problems, the better your chances of reaching a solution. |

This is certainly the case nagging problem for most Americans, their weight. No one can pretend that losing weight is not a fight. "But I'm on a diet" is the cry of countless people. These are not the same that many thin people. However, we can begin to end the struggle for sober look at the part being played by conscious decisions.
About a third of Americans are overweight and a further third are obese. But the problem is not just limited to the US. Obesity has become a global problem. More than one in ten people worldwide, are obese. Nor are the problems of overweight and obesity only rich nations. About 65% of the world population lives in countries where the problems of being overweight kills more people than underweight insufficient. And the costs of obesity are immense, in personal, social and economic terms. In the US, health care costs of obesity amounted to approximately $ 147 billion in 2008.
Obesity is generally defined by body mass index (BMI). BMI is the weight of an individual multiplied by 703 and then divided by twice its height in inches (BMI) calculators are available online. Many doctors think their waist-hip ratio (WHR) is a better indication of risk the disease. His RHO, found by dividing the waist circumference by the hip, is a relatively good indicator of whether you have excess visceral fat inside your abdomen. A ratio of less than 0.8 for women and 0.9 for men is believed to be healthy.
Factors of obesity. Current epidemic of obesity in our country is due to a "perfect storm" of cultural, social, economic, psychological and economic factors. Getting older and heredity are two established risk factors that influence the likelihood of being obese, but not determined.
Fortunately, other risk factors for obesity can be changed. Social and economic influences, as its regional culinary traditions, and how they ate growing up playing an important role. Surprisingly, the lack of a good night's sleep-07.08 hours is considered healthy for most people, it is a factor in weight gain. What type of food and amount of food you eat and how much physical activity you get, are vital. Food consumption "junk" highly processed foods, fast foods, and refined carbohydrates like white sugar, white flour and white rice-is a major risk factor.
Forget diets. Although we are a nation of dieters, which has done little or nothing to stem the tide of obesity. Studies have shown that a tiny percentage of dieters, usually less than 5%, are able to lose weight and keep it off for two years. In addition, the cycle of winning and losing the same ten or twenty pounds puts an unhealthy stress on your body.
The best way to lose weight is to make long-term changes in the way you eat, it changes you can live with for the rest of his life. There are many ways to do this. You can limit calories or portion sizes, or you can choose to limit certain foods (unhealthy, the fattening!) and emphasize others.
Make sure your daily diet includes nutrient dense whole foods such as whole grains, good fats (olive oil and other foods with omega-3 fatty acids), lean protein, whole fruits and vegetables.
If you do nothing else, do two things. First, avoid eating at fast food restaurants; learn to make quick and healthy meals at home. Second, if you are single or in a family, a chance to eat: sit at the table for real meals and keep the TV. Fast food and constant snacking are two great reasons for the obesity epidemic.
Exercise is your best friend when it comes to weight loss. If you have not exercised for a long time and are very out of shape, start by exercising for 10 minutes a day, and add more time to build up to 30 minutes to an hour every day.
Not both aerobic exercise (such as walking, swimming and cycling) and anaerobic exercise (resistance training, weight lifting) for best results. Aerobic exercise has many benefits: improved insulin sensitivity, strengthens your heart, gives you more energy, and more. Anaerobic exercise strengthens muscles and increases your metabolism to burn more calories, even when you are not exercising.
If you do not like exercise, you can find other ways to be more physically active: make your own house, plant a garden, dancing to your favorite music, park farther away from work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or find a sport they enjoy.
Surgical and medical solutions. There are many different types of gastric bypass surgery, but all involve spending part of your small intestine. If you have gastric bypass surgery, you still have to eat a healthy diet and exercise. So looking at surgery as a quick fix, or fantasizing that you can put off changing their habits because excess fat can be magically eradicated only lead to disappointment.
The types of Bariatric surgery include gastric bypass, gastroplasty, and gastric banding. Bariatric surgery is risky and can only be considered if you have a BMI of 40 or higher, or if your BMI is 35 to 39.9 and you have a health problem related to the heavy weight, such as diabetes or hypertension. Also keep in mind that the failure rate of people who have taken the path of surgery, with the risk of serious surgical complications, there is a small problem. Even a small stomach can hold enough food for obesity if their unhealthy habits do not change.
Weight loss drugs prescription can be used if you have a BMI of 30 or higher, or if your BMI is 27 or higher and have a condition related to obesity, such as hypertension, diabetes, or levels abnormal blood fat. There are two main types of medicines for weight loss: appetite suppressants and lipase inhibitors.
- Appetite suppressants: help you lose weight by decreasing appetite or making you feel fuller.
- Lipase inhibitors: are drugs that reduce (by about a third) the body's ability to absorb fat from the foods you eat. Current research suggests, however, that weight loss is modest for those who use these drugs, on average, less than ten pounds. We are still left with the role of conscious decisions and choices. Look at the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR)
Physical activity
• 94% increased their physical activity (most frequently through walking)
• 90% exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day
• 62% watch fewer than 10 hours of TV per week
Diet
• 98% modified their food intake in some way to lose weight
• 78% eat breakfast every day
Keeping track
• 75% weigh themselves at least once a week
Group support
• 55% lost weight with the help of some type of program
• 45% of registry participants lost the weight on their own
Start early to prevent obesity. Always it is true that losing weight is much harder to not put it in the first place. No security zone that is immune to this. Children who are obese are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and at an early age. Children too easily their habits in the habits of their parents, and so the cycle of obesity is passed from one generation to the next.
Society has given us ways to stay more sedentary as we become a culture depends on computers and video games, in addition to our addiction to television and eating out. Stress is assembled each year. All these have one thing in common. We make conscious choices exchange of unconscious habits. The solution is staring us in the face: claiming the right to decide who is going to be and how you will live. No other shortcuts, even though millions of people hope and pretend that there is. The good news is that a conscious lifestyle is not only healthier, but happier.
